A Beginner's Guide to Planting a Tree

March 18, 2025

Planting a tree is a rewarding and environmentally friendly way to enhance your landscape. Whether you're adding shade, increasing curb appeal, or supporting local wildlife, choosing the right tree and planting it correctly is essential for long-term success. This guide will walk you through the basics of tree planting, with expert tips to ensure your tree thrives for years to come.

Choosing the Right Tree for Your Space

Before you head to your local garden center, it's important to consider the type of tree that best suits your needs. Some trees provide excellent shade, while others produce flowers or fruit. Research the tree's growth habits, including its mature size, root structure, and sunlight requirements. According to This Old House, to allow newly planted trees the space they need to grow, and to prevent damage, it's important to plant them at least 15 feet away from your home, sidewalk, driveway, and other trees.

Preparing the Planting Site

Once you've selected a tree from your local garden center, it's time to prepare the planting site. Choose a location with well-draining soil and adequate sunlight. In our experience, it is best to dig a hole that is twice as wide as the tree's root ball but no deeper than the root system. Loosening the surrounding soil will help the roots establish more quickly. If your soil is compacted or of poor quality, consider mixing in organic matter to promote healthy growth.

Planting and Caring for Your Tree

Carefully remove the tree from its container or burlap wrapping, being gentle with the roots. Place the tree in the hole so that the root flare (where the trunk starts to widen) is at ground level. Backfill the hole with soil, gently tamping it down to remove air pockets. Water the tree thoroughly after planting and apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

We have found that regular watering, especially during the first year, is crucial for tree establishment. Depending on the species, additional care such as pruning or fertilization may be needed. Your local garden center can provide advice on the best care practices for your specific tree.
