6 Things to Get From Your Local Garden Center

Dec 20, 2023

A successful garden has a lot to do with your garden supplies. If you're relatively new to gardening, it's important to invest thoughtfully in your supplies. Having the right tools can make your gardening projects much easier. Here is a quick list of basic gardening tools you'll need to get started.

1. Gardening Gloves

When you first visit your local garden center, you'll want to find a quality pair of garden gloves. These will help to protect your hands from too much dirt and from injuries as well. It's better to go ahead and spend a little more on your gloves because if you wind up spending a lot of time in the garden, your gloves will really take a beating. Cheap gloves will tear apart quickly while a quality pair will last.

2. Trowel

A garden trowel is a versatile type of tool that can be used in almost every gardening job. You can use the trowel for weeding, dividing plants, transplanting, tilling up small patches of soil, mixing compost, digging out rocks, and many other jobs. Just like with gloves, you'll want to invest in a quality trowel as cheap ones tend to break easily.

3. Shovel

For bigger gardening projects, you'll need a heavy-duty shovel. Shovels are necessary to dig holes for new plantings, dig up old plants or shrubs, or remove large rocks. You can also use a shovel to spread compost easily without the need to get too dirty.

4. Garden Rake

You'll need a rake for gardening tasks as well as lawn maintenance. Keeping leaves off your grass is essential to a healthy lawn and discouraging the growth of unwanted pests. Get a tough rake that can last you many seasons.

5. Pruning Shears

A key to great gardening is knowing how, when, and how much to prune. You might think gardening is all about making things grow bigger and bigger, but actually, it's about helping things grow in a healthy way, and that often means thoughtful pruning. A quality pair of pruning shears can help you get this job done right.

6. Garden Hose

When you visit your
local garden center, don't forget the garden hose. Your plants will need regular, thoughtful watering. A long, well-made hose can make this job easier. All soil needs watering. If you add compost to your soil, for example, your soil will retain a good amount of moisture. In fact, according to Indiana University, soil that contains compost can hold about 250% more moisture than other soil. It's your responsibility to care for that soil with compost. That way, the compost can do its job.
